FACULTY HANDBOOK
EXHIBIT I: SAMPLES OF MENTOR NOTES FOR INITIAL CONTACT WITH LEARNERS

Samples of initial Learner contacts made by mentors:

Hello,

Welcome to NCU. I will be your Faculty Mentor for this course that has a start date of 8/1/04. By now, you should have received the course materials from NCU and hopefully you have acquired the text. Please let me know if you have any questions about the course. The Learner Handbook covers all the details about submission of assignments, use of assignment cover sheets, and so forth.

This attachment will give you some background about who I am, and you can access my faculty bio on the NCU website. We will use the NCU Messaging System to communicate and the Course Page to exchange assignment documents, using RTF formats. Please complete your Pre-course Survey, and let me know if you are unable to download and read this attachment (Jones NCU Vita).

I look forward to working with you on this course, and again, welcome to NCU.

Dick Jones,

Faculty Mentor

(He attaches his resume)

Hello,

I will be your Mentor for the subject course and I simply want to welcome you to NCU in general and to PSY504 in particular. I believe you will enjoy the course and become reasonably proficient with the computer while doing so. Don't let the computer nor the online process be a barrier to your learning. They are no more than obstacles in the beginning and wonders after you use them for a while. I look forward to working with you and will await the submission of your Pre-course Survey and the first assignment. When you do submit this assignment, please remember to include an Assignment Cover Sheet. Welcome and good learning.

Dr. Moravec

I am the faculty mentor in the above course and would like to welcome you to it. It will be nice working with you. If you need to contact me, please do so using the NCU Messaging System. The Voice Mail number is seldom accessed so please avoid using that contact point. I need to remind you that the End Date is set as <date>. I will contact you on <2 months prior date> to remind you of this deadline. If you send files attachments to a message, please only send one file per each message. Best wishes with the course.

R. Yellen

Thanks Dr. Jones, Dr. Moravec, and Dr. Yellen for sharing these.
